How Titanium Grades Impact Color Formulation and Color Performance

Enhanced Tinting Strength, Processability, and Dispersion for Plastics

Different titanium dioxide grades affect color formulation and the resulting product color performance. Diverse applications determine tinting strength requirements. Fully opaque, bright white applications need a high tinting strength titanium dioxide (TiO₂). Exterior color applications benefit from lower tinting strength pigments.

The relationship of tinting strength and undertone of TiO₂ pigments and grade selection are crucial for establishing consistent product color performance. Chemours partnered with customers and surveyed the market to identify how best to serve the needs of the plastics industry and worked to develop a formulation specifically designed to serve the needs of plastics manufacturers.

The new Ti-Pure™ R-104 formula improves upon the already-exceptional performance of the previous formula, delivering higher tinting strength, superior processability, enhanced dispersion into polymers, and the clean, bright blue undertone that our customers have come to expect.

This paper describes the relationship between titanium dioxide optical properties of tinting strength and undertone and the resulting effect on chroma, hue, and saturation within the color space.
